Municipal Election

The next municipal election will be held Monday, October 26, 2026. The last municipal election was held on October 24, 2022. Where the polling day falls on a holiday, polling day shall be the next succeeding day that is not a holiday.

Elections for municipal government are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October. Prior to the the passage of the Good Government Act, 2009 and the vote in 2006, the period between elections had been 3 years. For example, 2000, 2003 and 2006 were municipal election years.

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario legislation (Bill 81, Schedule H), passed in 2006, set the length of terms in office for all municipal elected officials at four years.

✅Who Can Run for Office?

You can run for municipal office if you meet all of the following criteria on the day you file your nomination:

You are a resident of the municipality, or you own or rent property there (or the spouse of someone who does)
You are a Canadian citizen
You are at least 18 years old
You are not otherwise disqualified from holding municipal office under any legislation

Candidates must obtain nomination papers from the Office of the Clerk and then schedule an appointment with the Clerk/Designate to submit completed forms by 2:00 p.m. on August 21, 2026, along with the prescribed fee to be eligible for certification as a candidate.

Nominations will be received for the offices of:

Mayor - 1 position at large [$200.00]
Councillors - 4 positions at large [$100.00]

The Township of Strong will be using internet and telephone voting.

Voting is available during the designated election period which starts on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. and ends on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 8:00 p.m.

Voter Information Letter (VIL)

Eligible electors will receive a Voter Information Letter by mail. The VIL includes instructions on how to vote by internet or telephone.

The Township of Strong has an election sign/advertising policy that sets out requirements during an election campaign period that candidates need observe.

Joint Compliance Audit Committee

The Joint Compliance Audit Committee has full delegation of the authority in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, to address applications requesting an audit of a candidate’s and a registered third party advertiser’s election campaign finances. This authority includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Review applications and grant or reject audit requests
Where an audit is granted, appoint an auditor and review the audit report
Where indicated, decide whether legal proceedings shall be commenced

The Joint Compliance Audit Committee will consist of members that must have the ability to understand and apply the election campaign finance provisions of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and should be considered impartial with respect to their ability to fulfill their responsibilities. Preference shall be given to candidates that have applicable experience in accounting, law, law enforcement and academics from related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
(a) Accounting and audit – accountants or auditors with experience in preparing or auditing the financial statements of municipal candidates;
(b) Academic – college or university professors with expertise in political science or local government administration;
(c) Legal; and
(d) Other individuals with knowledge of the campaign financing rules of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996

School Support Designation

Property owners in Ontario are required to support a school board, even if they do not have children or their children are not currently attending school. In the case of a residential property occupied by tenants, the tenants can direct the school support for that property. By default, school support is directed to your municipality’s English Public School Board.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is legislatively required to collect school support information and provide it in the assessment roll to every municipality and school board. By ensuring that you are supporting the school board of your choosing, you will be able to vote in the next municipal and school board election for trustees in that school board. Property owners, occupants, and tenants can update their school support designation online at MPAC.

If you wish to change your school board support, please do so with MPAC by June 1, 2026

Next steps for those electors who have missed the June 1 deadline to change their School Support designation on Elections Ontario's Preliminary List of Electors.

Electors can still change their School Support designation through MPAC, by:

Contacting MPAC's Customer Contact Centre, and receive a confirmation letter - please submit this to the Election Official; or
Online via MPAC's AboutMyProperty™ or tenant portal, and receive an auto generated confirmation email - please submit this to the Election Official.

Third Party Advertising

Packages to register as a Third-Party Advertiser will be available below or in-person at the Municipal Office as of Friday, May 1, 2026 until end of business day on Friday October 23, 2026. It is encouraged that you schedule an appointment to file your papers with the Clerk. Registrations must be filed in-person. The Advertising Period is restricted from May 1, 2026 to close of voting (8 p.m.) on October 26, 2026.

Voter Information

🗳️Who Can Vote?

To be eligible to vote, you must meet the Qualifications of Electors as listed in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, s.17(2). A person is entitled to be an elector in Parry Sound, on voting day, if they meet all of the following conditions:

A Canadian citizen
At least 18 years old
A resident, owner or tenant of land in Parry Sound or the spouse of such tenant or owner
Not prohibited from voting under Section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, s.17(2), or any other Act.

Acceptable Identification for Voter Identification

The Township of Strong is using the Telephone/Internet method of voting for the 2026 Municipal Election. For instructions on how to cast your vote, an instructional video is available.

Voter Information Letters will be mailed to electors during the week of September 22, 2026. Eligible voters shall be required to telephone a designated number or access a designated internet address and cast their vote. Every eligible elector shall be limited to only one vote through the use of a PIN distributed within your personalized Voter Information Letter. Once the PIN has been used to complete all assigned races associated with the election it cannot be used again, and further access shall not be granted to the Telephone/Internet Voting service to vote again. Voting will commence at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and will remain open until 8:00 pm on Monday, October 26, 2026.

If you do not receive your voter information letter, need be added to the voter list, or for more information on the 2026 Municipal Election, contact the Township Office by email, telephone, in-person during regular business hours.
