MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF
WAYNE BEAVIS
The
Fire Department would like to remind you that every home in Ontario must have a
working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless
gas that can quickly kill you. Have your
furnace and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year and install a carbon monoxide
alarm. Stay Fire Smart... Don’t Get Burned. Any
question calls the Fire Station at 384-7378.
Fire Chief Wayne Beavis
Projects
completed in 2009:
Landfill
# 1-
Council is happy to announce that
2009 saw some significant upgrades to our municipal landfill site located at
483 Forest Lake Rd.
The
new Coverall building and baler unit which were installed were purchased
through Provincial and Federal Funding, allowing the Township to improve its
Recycling facilities. They also enable
the municipality’s updated recycling facilities to be more marketable, with
future hopes of increasing Landfill revenue.
Projects
to be completed in 2010:
Township
Office Renovations-
This project is a $350,000.00
project with 2/3 paid for in funding by the Provincial and Federal levels of
government. The township was also able
to use $30,000.00 of additional funding from previous federal funding
initiatives, leaving the actual cost to the Township at a minimal price for the amount of work which is
being/has been completed.
The Township Office has spent the
past few months undergoing a facelift, with upgrades to the office for easier
accessibility to the public, as well as bringing our Emergency Operation Centre
up and running in the event of local emergencies as well as allowing the Joint
Building Committee upstairs easier accessibility to the public.
Some of the offices will provide
the municipality with possible future revenue.
There are also 2 spare offices available for use in the upstairs portion
of the building. Finally, Council
chambers have been extended to accommodate growing needs which will also serve
as available space for training and seminars in the years to come.
Future
Projects:
Parklands-
The Ontario government mandates
that all severances which are granted are charged a fee to be put towards
Cash-in-lieu of parklands for the municipality in question. This reserve fund is only to be used towards
parkland projects.
With this in mind, Strong Council
will use these funds for their share (1/3) of the Build Canada Fund
Infrastructure Stimulus Funding received for Parkland improvements.
New upgrades include Picnic
tables for Stirling Creek Park, South Lake Bernard Beach, Legion Park, Checker
Board Park and at the Municipal Office, as well as doggy stands and disposal
bags at the Union Street and Stirling Creek parks. The Checker Board Park will be equipped with
a floating raft and benches, and South Lake Bernard Beach with also feature a
boat ramp extension, floating dock, playground equipment with swings and a
stand up teeter totter. There will also
be an arch bridge over the culvert at the Legion Park to allow more access to
the park.
At 3 of the parks, there will be
Local tourist information signs highlighting the locations of all parks located
in Strong Township to encourage residents to enjoy our wonderful northern
community.
Landfill # 1-
Public Works dept is looking into
moving their mulcher to a permanent home at the Landfill site. Within a few months time, residents would be
able to leave items for mulching with the Landfill site staff to be picked up
for their personal use. Stay tuned for
updates on this project.
